Biographical Note
Edward J. Pope Jr. was born in Rye, NY and graduated from Yale University in 1942. He joined the navy and served in WWII as a PT Boat officer in Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He served in the Reserves, retiring as a commander. Pope worked as a writer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Hollywood for ten years, then for the Department of Defense in Paris from 1955-1965. He worked for U.S. companies there and married Princess Niloufer of Turkey and Hyderabad in 1962. In 1990, he returned to the USA where he became the managing director of international affairs for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. He married Evelyn Maddox of Middleburg, VA that same year.

Abstract
Diary and photographs, 1944-1945. The diary begins on April 1, 1944 with the voyage on SS Cape Victory to Guadalcanal and Treasury Island and concludes on June 6, 1945 with his return to the USA in USS Hershey with a stop in Hawaii. Pope comments on his daily routine, a bombing mission over Rabaul, broadcasts of Tokyo Rose, his assignment on PT 129, the 1944 typhoon, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Kamikaze attacks, battle at Olmuc, Pl, the war in Europe, assignment with PT 134, PT boat raids, recreation, social life with WACS, nurses, and Red Cross workers, death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, V-E Day, PT boat hits and list of PT boats damaged, and casualties. Photographs are of PT boats, crews, officers, and Filipino natives.
