Scope and Contents The twenty-five box collection measures twelve and one-half linear feet and is divided into five series. Series I contains typescript copies of personal letters sent by Sims to his parents, his sister Louisa and brothers, Harry and Alfred, his friend Jones, and to his wife, Anne Hitchcock Sims. Abstract

Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale (1923-2005) was a highly decorated naval aviator who spent nearly eight years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. He was the fortieth President of the Naval War College and after his retirement from the navy he served as President of The Citadel, Charleston, S.C and was an independent candidate for Vice President of the U.S. in 1992. This collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, speeches, and writings relating to Stockdale’s naval and academic careers.

Content Description The papers of Captain Roy Campbell Smith, USN, were presented to the Naval War College in two separate lots: the first accession, composed primarily of U.S. Navy Department official orders, was given in 1941 by Commander Roy C. Smith Jr., his son, and the second accession, comprising the bulk of the collection, was donated through the Naval War College Foundation in 1983 by Mrs. William T. Sampson Smith, his youngest son's widow and second wife.The papers focus on Roy Campbell Smith's naval career, which spanned the last two decades of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. The collection contains documents relating to his early service with the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, R.I., his association with the Naval War College as a staff member over the years, his experiences as a naval attache in F ranee and pre-revolutionary Russia, his participation in the occupation of Vera Cruz in 1914, and his governorship of Guam. In addition, the papers shed light on navy personnel and promotion policies and efforts to reorganize the Navy Department after the turn of the century. The twenty-four box manuscript collection measures ten linear feet and is divided into four distinct series and is further divided into subseries. Series I, family papers, consists of genealogical materials taken from Morgan City, Louisiana Archives on the Brashear and Lawrence families, a history of Morgan City, LA, and correspondence and newspaper clippings regarding the restoration of the Lawrence family cemetery in Bayside, Long Island. William Veazie Pratt papers

Content Description The William Veazie Pratt papers document Admiral Pratt’s active naval career from 1910 to 1933, and through his retirement until his death in 1957. They consist of official and personal materials that are especially important for an insight into the problems facing the U.S. Navy during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Included are materials on the Washington Naval Conference, 1921–1922; naval disarmament; U.S. naval policy in the 1920s and 1930s; and the Naval War College in the 1920s.The bulk of the papers were acquired by the Naval War College Foundation from William Veazie Pratt, Jr., of Belfast, Maine, in four separate accessions made between 1968 and 1971. William McCarty Little papers

The William McCarty Little Papers is fragmentary collection which documents aspects of Little's later career, 1880-1915.

The papers consist of correspondence, published and unpublished writings including lectures and translations of French and Italian works on tactics, a general subjects file, and family papers. The general subjects file is arranged alphabetically by topic and, among other things, it includes valuable material on the construction of the replicas of Columbus' ships for the 1892 Columbian Exposition, the Rhode Island Naval Militia in the period just before the Spanish-American War, and the work of the Naval War College in its early years. There are also a few items which relate to the early years of naval war gaming. Family papers include some of the Naval War College materials of McCarty Little's grandson, Julian M. Boit, and a family photograph album which contains carte de visite photographs of naval officers with whom Little served in the period 1865-1875.
