Fred F. Rogers papers

Abstract

Captain Fred F. Rogers (1884-1952) had a naval career that spanned over 35 years during which he served as a naval attaché to the American Embassy in Japan, commanded various battleships, studied and taught at the Naval War College, and led the Naval Construction Training Center in Davisville, R.I. during World War II. These papers primarily consist of lectures, student papers, and photographs that document Rogers’ experiences and research on Japan in the 1930s and his command of the Seabees at Camp Endicott, Naval Construction Training Center, Davisville, R.I. during World War II.

Letters sent by Anne Sims to William S. Sims, 1906, 1909–1912, 1915–1917, regarding family matters. Scope and Contents The twenty-five box collection measures twelve and one-half linear feet and is divided into five series. Series I contains typescript copies of personal letters sent by Sims to his parents, his sister Louisa and brothers, Harry and Alfred, his friend Jones, and to his wife, Anne Hitchcock Sims. James B. Stockdale papers

Abstract

Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale (1923-2005) was a highly decorated naval aviator who spent nearly eight years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. He was the fortieth President of the Naval War College and after his retirement from the navy he served as President of The Citadel, Charleston, S.C and was an independent candidate for Vice President of the U.S. in 1992. This collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, speeches, and writings relating to Stockdale’s naval and academic careers.

Raymond A. Spruance papers

Scope and Contents The personal papers of Raymond A. Spruance, was donated to the Naval War College by Mrs. Spruance in 1970, only a year after the admiral's death. The collection contains eleven boxes of manuscript materials, along with memorabilia, including uniform items, medals, and Japanese Samurai swords. The papers focus, in the main, on the admiral's distinguished naval career, aspects of his ambassadorial appointnent, and his retirement years.Series I, Correspondence, consists of letters relating to his position as Commander of the Central Pacific Force, 1943-1944; the Battle of Midway, 1943; official orders and copies of messages sent relating to duty assignments, 1906-1950; and letters received and drafts of letters sent regarding naval matters. Other correspondence focuses on the Naval History Division Spruance biography by V ADM Emmet P. Forrestel. Spruance was not a particularly loquacious person and was reluctant to commit his thoughts to paper, hence the correspondence series is limited in both scope and quantity.Writings and speeches comprise Series II and Series III. Speeches consist of holograph drafts and typescripts given when Spruance was Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, President of the Naval War College, and in a retired status.
