Early records of the U.S. Naval War College

Overview Correspondence, memoranda, lists, contracts, inventories, military and naval orders, and plans regarding the early administration and curriculum of the Naval War College, new building construction, and items relating to the establishment of a naval coaling station in Narraganset Bay. Also included are journals and letterpress copybooks kept by past NWC presidents Charles Stockton and French Chadwick.

Alfred Thayer Mahan papers

Content Description This collection consists of: (1) Letters written to daughter, Helen, 1884-1896, (2) Research notes compiled, 1897-1914, (3) Copies of family photographs, (4) A diary and several items relating to Mahan's service in USS WACHUSETT, 1868-1869, and photocopies of Mahan letters to British naval historian Sir John Knox Laughton between 1893 and 1914. The copies were acquired from the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England, in 1981.
