Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of photographs, financial reports, curriculums, correspondence, minutes, and newspaper articles pertaining to Naval War College studies, events, buildings, and people. Subjects include the Surface War Officers School, Naval Education and Training Command, Naval Academy Preparatory School, Naval Science Insitute, Officer Candidate School, Vietnamese Officer Candidate School, Seabees, ship crew members, and Navy families. Events include change of command ceremonies, graduation ceremonies, foreign and domestic ship visits, holidays, and the Navy fleet’s departure from Newport in 1973. The folders “People and Events A-Z" encompass photographs of individuals associated with the Naval War College, organized by last name. The collection further contains aerial and historical photographs of Naval Station Newport as buildings were being constructed.

This collection also consists of photographs, correspondence, and newspaper articles regarding events in Newport outside the naval base. These include media coverage of several presidential visits, Tall Ships festivals, holiday parades, and the 1999 Egypt Air Flight 990 crash. Early photographs of the Newport bridge are also included.

This collection consists of photographs, minutes, correspondence, newspaper articles, and programs pertaining to Naval War College studies, buildings, people, and events. The collection also includes photographs and correspondence of events in Newport.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title, then chronologically when applicable.

Custodial History

The Naval War College Museum recovered this collection from destruction in Apr 2015. It is assumed this collection originated from the Public Affairs Office out of Naval Station Newport, but supporting documentation is missing.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred from the Naval War College Museum, 2024.

Processing Information

This collection was processed, arranged, and refoldered according to current archival standards in Mar 2024 by Alix Etheridge. Materials were rearranged in alphabetical order and misleading titles were renamed. Photographs were not removed from original envelopes.
