Biographical Note

George Dewey, U.S. Naval officer, was born in 1837 and died in 1917. He was victor of the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War and became a national hero. He was given the special rank of Admiral of the Navy and exempt from retirement. He remained on active duty until his death.
