Scope and Contents

Greene discusses his youth in New Britain, CT, and his enlistment in the US Navy in 1943, including his basic training at Great Lakes, IL, and advanced training as a radio operator and gunner at Memphis, TN, Yellow Water, FL, Daytona, FL, Wildwood, NJ, and Virginia Beach, VA. He was assigned to a dive bomber aboard the USS Bennington and went to the Pacific Theatre where he was involved in bombing raids on Tokyo, Japan and Okinawa. He comments on the typhoon of 1944 and the attack on the Yamato. Greene discusses the impact the Navy had on his life and how his time in service changed his life.
