Typescript of oral history interview with a focus on the Vietnam War during which Hyland served as Commander Seventh Fleet, 1965-1967, and Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, 1967- 1970; Discussion focuses on his problems and frustrations during his command of the Pacific Fleet; A discussion of the events surrounding the seizure of the intelligence-gathering ship Pueblo by North Korea in 1968, and his recommendation for military action in this case; His thoughts on command responsibility, his strained relationship with Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt and his opinions of his reform programs; Commentary on the way the United States conducted the Vietnam War, the use of naval aviation and his relationship with Admiral John S. McCain and Admiral Thomas H. Moorer and other Flag Rank officers of the period.
