Scope and Contents

Burke, Arleight A., ADM, USN, 1901-1996. Volume IV in the Special Series with Admiral Burke focuses on the Unification Controversy in 1949.The first part contains Admiral Burke's narrative on Military History from the French Revo­ lution through WWII and the lessons derived there from. A series of six interviews follows in which Burke treats the establishment in 1948 of OP-23, a division of the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. As head of OP-23, Burke had to fend off attempts by the Air Force to absorb naval avi­ ation, in what became known as the Unification Controversy. Topics and persons discussed include the Air Force, James Forrestal, the French Army, Napoleon, WWI, WWII, and Stuart Symington.
