Scope and Contents
Burke, Arleight A., ADM, USN, 1901-1996. Volume IV in the Special Series with Admiral Burke focuses on the Unification Controversy in 1949.The first part contains Admiral Burke's narrative on Military History from the French Revo lution through WWII and the lessons derived there from. A series of six interviews follows in which Burke treats the establishment in 1948 of OP-23, a division of the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. As head of OP-23, Burke had to fend off attempts by the Air Force to absorb naval avi ation, in what became known as the Unification Controversy. Topics and persons discussed include the Air Force, James Forrestal, the French Army, Napoleon, WWI, WWII, and Stuart Symington.
