Letters sent by Anne Sims to William S. Sims, 1906, 1909–1912, 1915–1917, regarding family matters. Scope and Contents The twenty-five box collection measures twelve and one-half linear feet and is divided into five series. Series I contains typescript copies of personal letters sent by Sims to his parents, his sister Louisa and brothers, Harry and Alfred, his friend Jones, and to his wife, Anne Hitchcock Sims. They date from 1881 to 1925. Several personal letters Sims received are located here. James B. Stockdale papers

Abstract

Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale (1923-2005) was a highly decorated naval aviator who spent nearly eight years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. He was the fortieth President of the Naval War College and after his retirement from the navy he served as President of The Citadel, Charleston, S.C and was an independent candidate for Vice President of the U.S. in 1992. This collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, speeches, and writings relating to Stockdale’s naval and academic careers.

Raymond A. Spruance papers

Scope and Contents The personal papers of Raymond A. Spruance, was donated to the Naval War College by Mrs. Spruance in 1970, only a year after the admiral's death. The collection contains eleven boxes of manuscript materials, along with memorabilia, including uniform items, medals, and Japanese Samurai swords. The papers focus, in the main, on the admiral's distinguished naval career, aspects of his ambassadorial appointnent, and his retirement years.Series I, Correspondence, consists of letters relating to his position as Commander of the Central Pacific Force, 1943-1944; the Battle of Midway, 1943; official orders and copies of messages sent relating to duty assignments, 1906-1950; and letters received and drafts of letters sent regarding naval matters. Other correspondence focuses on the Naval History Division Spruance biography by V ADM Emmet P. Forrestel. Spruance was not a particularly loquacious person and was reluctant to commit his thoughts to paper, hence the correspondence series is limited in both scope and quantity.Writings and speeches comprise Series II and Series III. Speeches consist of holograph drafts and typescripts given when Spruance was Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, President of the Naval War College, and in a retired status. The personal papers of Rear Admiral Richard W. Bates (1892-1973) cover the years 1915-1973. He was a commanding officer on many ships in the Navy. His collection consists of correspondence, subject files, writings, speeches, and miscellaneous items. The papers are arranged in four series based on an established file system. They mainly encompass Bates career as a Naval Officer, family, and social life in Newport, as well as other aspects of his career including published and unpublished writings, notes, photographs, slide presentations, and reports.

Wilma S. Miles papers

Content Description The Wilma J. Miles papers were presented to the Naval War College in two separate lots: the first accession, mainly correspondence, writings, tourist literature, and photographs, was given by Mrs. Miles in 1974, and the second lot, correspondence and tourist literature relating to South America, in 1977. Both accessions were presented through the Naval War College Foundation.The papers focus on Wilma Miles’s life and travels as a Navy wife for over a quarter of a century, with emphasis on the period from 1925 to 1955. They include materials relating to her life as a young bride in China from 1925 to 1927 during the era of the warlords and growing Chinese nationalism, and a return three-year stay there from 1936 to 1939, just prior to the outbreak of World War II. Another large segment of the papers focuses on her travels throughout South America when her husband served as Commandant of the Fifteenth Naval District, Balboa, Canal Zone, from 1954 to 1956.The collection contains fifteen boxes, a file cabinet of photographs, and numerous photograph albums and books.
