Content Description From the Collection: The collection is divided into ten series. Series One, Biographical Information, contains Pineau’s vita and biographical information, while Series II, Civilian and Naval Papers, has personnel and retirement papers, 1965–1972, as well as his naval orders and fitness reports, 1943–1978.Correspondence, both letters sent and received, is one of the largest components of the collection and it is arranged by last name and topic for the years 1942–1993. Prominent correspondents include Hanson Baldwin, Captain Edward Beach, CDR Masatake Chihaya, James Fahey, Goro Nakano, the U.S. Naval Institute, Jurgen Rohwer, Robert Sherrod, and the Smithsonian Institution. A second segment of correspondence contains letters to and from individuals for whom he performed appraisals.Series Four holds speech notes and speeches that Pineau gave between 1965 and the early 1990s. In addition, there are speeches given by other individuals. Captain Pineau was a prolific writer on military topics, especially World War II. Included in Series Five, Writings, are his articles and book reviews, as well as articles and book reviews of others on military topics. Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection consists of twenty-seven boxes of official and personal papers that are divided into eight series that document the admiral's military career and retirement employment. The collection is unrestricted and open to researchers.Series One, Correspondence, contains the admiral's personal letters received, 1935-1988, and professional correspondence, 1955-1957. Correspondents include his brother Charles, family members and friends who wrote to him while he was at the U.S. Naval Academy, 1935-1939, and later assignments. Professional correspondence covers the years 1953-1957 and includes letters sent and received from naval personnel.Series Two, Writings, has the admiral's published and unpublished writings, dating from 1950 to 1985. Published writings appeared in The Navy Magazine and the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings.Series Three houses speeches given during the years 1962 to 1985. Topics vary and include convocation addresses, the Soviet Navy, logistics, and SEATO.Series Four contains published writings by prominent political figures and naval officers, including CDR Thomas Buell, Edward L. Scope and Contents From the Collection: The collection is divided into four series: correspondence, speeches and writings, subject files, and miscellany. A majority of materials are unclassified; however, several boxes relating to negotiations over U.S. Base Lease Agreements with the West Indies Federation, 1957–1960, are classified. Researchers must have a bona fide security clearance to examine the latter. Unclassified portions of this material are in the main collection. Series I, correspondence, consists of both official and personal letters sent and received. The official sector contains U.S. Navy orders, accounts, travel vouchers, promotions, and commendations along with intelligence reports submitted as an observer of the Royal Navy, 1940–1941. In addition, there are several cartons of correspondence and messages relating to negotiations with the West Indies Federation over U.S. Lease Agreements at the naval base at Chaguaramas, Trinidad. The bulk of the correspondence, however, contains Wellings’ personal letters to his wife during his active naval service. They focus on major commands and aspects of his career, including his witnessing of the sinking of the Bismarck aboard the Rodney, 1940–1941; his command of USS Strong during WWII operations in the Solomon Islands, 1943; and destroyer operations in the Pacific, 1944–1945.
